Red Hot Toy Peppers

2/5th of team toys headed to Quicksilver's Site LA for an event benefiting the super rad, Silverlake Music Conservatory.

Drinks were consumed, music was played and Tous realized his doppleganger is in fact Michael Peter Balzary (aka Flea of our Toyfather band, Red Hot Chili Peppers).

Way to rep the blazer T shirt combo! Unstoppable!

Look for the Toys and Peppers to share a stage or 2 before we die ;-)

Adventures in Toyland

Rather than waiting to pontificate or ruminate on some musical epiphany, I thought I'd just share a few pics from the weekend.

We spent most of it working on a slamming cover of Earth Wind & Fire's classic tune, September, but managed to make a few appearances about LA.

Adventure #1

The Birthday of super rad DJ and BFT homie C-Town in Venice! Mexican themed awesomeness with some of LA finest including Anne Lee, Dirty Dave and of course C-Town's lovely lady, DJ Valida (who is so fabulous, she has a life-size cut-out of herself in their vinyl stacked living room!) note: Fan of both proper vinyl and big cut-outs.

The theme was punk tee shirts and I wore a Plasmatics shirt which far too many people didn't recognize. Respect ya'll! Apparently it was also a leather jacket party. I would recount more, but the Don Julio and antibiotics combined to pretty reliable memory eraser...

Adventure #2
THE CalArts Graphic Design House Warming Party Feature a special advanced preview of our upcoming COLD FEVER music video by Timothy Garrett!

Holy Shit! What were we thinking going to USC? CalArts Gallery shows feature free Pabst beer, strawberries, cookies and even orange sherbet and Gingerale! The Art was first rate too, until I had to touch a tee shirt display... opps. Never touch the art kidz.

Inner narrative, "Opps, shouldn't have done that. I'll just hang it up... and drop it again on the floor.... shit. I'm totally that person who knocks over something... I hope no one is watching... but yes, yes they are."

Luckily, Tim came to the rescue and posed with us in front of some of his Stussy Designs...

Then we found a GOOD Magazine with my hand on the cover! Why I'm throwing a peace sign escapes me??

Some of our favorite pieces...

Reebok pumps! Hollar!

Dan Deacon look a like? Stoop art with Nassir... Then it was time for the screening!

We were nervous (well, I was).

... and then the people clapped and all was well in the house of Toy!

Ok, real video coming soon... like tomorrow?!!

Adventure #3

Pirate's Night Out!

Sammy and I decided to hit up Redwood Bar to catch our fine buddy Barry (of Something for Rockets) playing with his side project, featuring the spoken word of another BFT endorsed artist, Poet Danny Stessen along with The Gray Kid on bass. Kick ass.

It's really a Pirate Bar!

Our ears were both a little shot from mixing all day... note the glazed eyes...

but the show was superb along with the chick's afro that magically appeared in all our show photos...

...note bottom right hand fro' sweetness....

Got a little second wind thanks to the tiger cub family on my shirt compliments of Los Feliz finest vintage store, Squaresville.

A fine weekend indeed... until the Lakers lost GAME 4 to the JAZZ! C'mon!

Onwards and upwards!

Pop music is not like pharmaceuticals

It’s Sammy here. I play the geetar with Bedtime for Toys. I have thought quite a bit about what my first post on the Bedtime for Toys blog should be about.

Luckily, there has been a lot of great online commentary recently about a music article that originally appeared in the magazine, The American. The original article explained how the lack of legitimate new pop stars will potentially affect the traditional music biz machinery once the baby boomer bands (The Rolling Stone, The Eagles, etc.) pass on to the great backstage party in the sky .

I love pop music. I care about pop music. I make pop music. I have dedicated my life to pop music. Bedtime for Toys aspires to live up to the expert craft of our pop heroes like Prince, The Clash, Run DMC, Madonna, Van Halen and The Talking Heads. We owe nothing less to our audience than to give them what we would expect from our favorite artists that challenged us to dream.

However, times have changed and pop stars are no longer only created by major labels, MTV, and mainstream radio to be accepted by a passive audience. Just as it will continue to be in the future, pop stars are now created by bloggers, file swappers, and Myspace friends.

In the fantastic PopMatters.com commentary that I have linked below, the author makes the point that “pop music is not like pharmaceuticals. It doesn’t take a whole lot of R&D and isn’t necessarily the high-fixed-cost industry…” that major labels have convinced themselves that they need to be to create a perceived value.

To the contrary, the people have spoken and the democratization of pop music has probably been the number one cause of the destruction of the music business as we have previously known it. The music business dictatorship is crumbling and as a member of Bedtime for Toys I can’t possibly imagine a more exciting time to be making music. Thank you for the opportunity.

Enjoy the read…
